“At least 26 people were killed at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, on Sunday, law enforcement confirmed. The shooter is also dead following a brief chase.
“As a state, we are dealing with the largest mass shooting in our state’s history,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said.
Here’s what we know — and don’t.
What we know
The shooting reportedly occurred at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, around 11:20 am local time, law enforcement said.
At least 26 people were killed, although it’s not clear if that number will rise, Abbott said at a press conference. Approximately 20 others were injured.
The shooter is dead following a car pursuit by a local resident. Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt told CNN that the gunman shot himself after the resident hit him.
The dead victims’ ages range from 18 months to 77 years old, a Texas Department of Safety official said.
First Baptist Church Pastor Frank Pomeroy’s 14-year-old daughter and all of his family’s close friends were killed in the attack, Pomeroy told Houston-based ABC13.
The shooter has been identified as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley, law enforcement officials told CBS and NBC News.
Kelley was previously in the Air Force, but he was court martialed and received a bad-conduct discharge for allegedly assaulting his spouse and their child, according to NBC News.
Local, state, and federal law enforcement are on the ground.
There is no other threat in the area at the time, according to law enforcement.
Sutherland Springs is about 30 miles southeast of San Antonio. It’s an unincorporated community with a population of about 600, according to CNN.
The church regularly posts videos of its services. They show a vibrant community, with parishioners singing, playing electric guitar, and talking about topics ranging from their faith to riding a motorcycle.”

That’s a classic NRA-tive and by all means not backed by any statistic.
The “bad guy with a gun” always has the moment of surprise on his side cause everyone else is caught off-guard. Even in the NRA-paradise – a Wild West-style open-carry-community – a “good guy” needs some seconds to react. In that time the “bad guy” (armed with an AR-style weapon) could have killed a dozen people.
In the latest mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, the killer took his own life, he wasn’t taken down by a “good guy”.
Who thinks a bunch of “good guys” could have prevented the carnage in Las Vegas ? Ridiculous.
BTW, I’m from Europe. Like 99% of my fellow Europeans, I never possessed or fired a real gun in my life and hope I never will. We don’t need guns for self-protection, we feel protected by an effective police. We never had guns as a part of our lifestyles. Instead, we go watching football (soccer) games, hanging out with friends at the beach or enjoy traveling to other places. Life has more to offer then being afraid of getting shot.
Despite living abroad, I care a lot about what’s going on in America especially when it comes to the daily madness of “Trumpocracy” and its awful repercussions.
I really do love America, but if a pregnant woman would ask me today where the right place to raise her child would be, I bet I would not say “the USA”. That makes me so sad.
People like you and TYT hinder me from losing hope completely.
