PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Reporter will be responsible for identifying, reporting and producing political and social news coverage for use by the TYT Network.  The role will focus on politics and current events, with emphasis on having a strong, independent and authentic voice. The Reporter will travel to be on-site at events and will conduct interviews, provide commentary, and serve as TYT’s field reporter at news events.  The position is accountable for recommending what news to cover, developing compelling lines of questioning, breaking stories, conducting interviews and producing outstanding coverage both independently and with guidance from the Managing Editor of The Young Turks.

  • The position will play a critical role in providing political and current events field coverage for The Young Turks Main Show, TYT Politics, and other network shows, as needed.
  • Identify news stories and report on political and current events news in video and print form.
  • Collaborate extensively with field cameraman, producer, editor and internal staff, including the Managing Editor and Host of The Young Turks, Editing, Publishing, Social Media, Marketing, Graphics, and other Production staff.
  • Operate with a high level of independence, regarding what news to cover and events at which to be present.  Guidance will be provided by Managing Editor of The Young Turks, but this position will require sophistication and good judgment regarding newsworthiness, how best to develop and approach stories, and how to produce compelling content for online distribution.
  • Support the development and growth of the TYT Politics YouTube & Facebook channels.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong understanding of politics (not electoral horse-race coverage).
  • Experience on digital platforms or other media outlets.  Television, radio, or political reporting a plus but not required. (If you are on Twitter shining a light on important policy issues or calling out shoddy reporting, we want to hear from you)
  • Deep curiosity about (and, even better, knowledge about) one or more important policy issue(s) neglected or mishandled by mainstream TV news
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills
  • Ability to travel at least 50% and on short notice
  • Empathy
